Every e-commerce operator wants the same thing: to know exactly what a competitor is spending and what return they are getting. It would make every decision easier. So you open a spy tool, it shows you a confident-looking spend number, and you build a plan around it.
Here is the uncomfortable truth: no public tool actually shows you a competitor's real spend or ROAS. They show you estimates, and those estimates are often wildly off. Treating a guess as a fact is how brands copy a "winner" that was quietly losing money. This guide explains why exact spend and ROAS are not publicly visible, why the estimates are unreliable, and what actually gets you close to the real numbers.
Why you cannot just "see" it publicly
Meta does not publish how much any advertiser spends or what ROAS they get. That data lives inside their ad account, which you have no access to, and never will through public means. So when a tool shows you a competitor's "spend," it is not reading their account. It is inferring, based on signals it can observe from the outside.
This is the root of the problem. The single most important number, real spend, and the number that actually matters, real return, are precisely the two that never leave the account. Everything a public tool tells you about them is a reconstruction from the outside, not a reading from the inside.
Why the estimates are unreliable
Public tools infer spend from what is visible: how many ads are running, how long they have been live, rough traffic signals, and the like. What they cannot see is the part that actually determines real spend and ROAS:
How the budget is actually split
A competitor might run forty ads, but put almost all their budget behind two of them. A tool counting ads has no way to know which are funded and which are barely running. The distribution is invisible, and the distribution is the whole story.
Which ads are scaled and which are barely funded
A long-running ad looks significant to a tool. In reality it might be a cheap test the owner forgot to turn off. Duration is not spend. An ad can run for months on pocket change, or burn a fortune in a week. The tool cannot tell the difference.
The account structure behind the delivery
How campaigns are organized, how a winner is scaled, how budget flows, all of this shapes real spend, and none of it is visible from the Ad Library. We cover this in depth in our guide on why spy tools do not show real data.
The actual results
ROAS, conversion rate, real profitability, these never leave the account. A tool can guess at revenue from traffic estimates, but it cannot see whether a campaign made money or lost it. So the number that matters most, whether the spend was actually working, is pure inference.
What actually gets you close to the real numbers
You cannot get a competitor's exact figures the way you see your own dashboard, and anyone claiming otherwise is overselling. But the choice is not "exact figures" versus "nothing." It is "a public tool's rough guess" versus "a real, account-level read." The second gets you far closer through deeper, human-led intelligence:
- Estimated real spend based on account-level signals, not just how many ads are live.
- The campaign structure and scaling pattern, which reveal where the real money is going.
- Which creative is actually their winner, versus which are tests.
- The store metrics behind it that determine whether that spend is even profitable.
This is analysis, not a dashboard number. It gets you a realistic picture instead of a guess, which is exactly what our competitive intelligence service is built to deliver. And to be clear about the boundary: this is intelligence work on signals and publicly derivable data, not unauthorized access to anyone's account.
The honest bottom line
There is no magic button that shows a rival's exact spend and ROAS. Anyone selling you that is lying. But for a decision worth real budget, a realistic, account-level read is worth far more than a tool's confident-looking guess, and it is the difference between copying a competitor's mistake and understanding their actual strategy.
